Bee Hammer
Categories: California House

Two things you don’t want to hear you wife say in the same sentence:

There is a bee on your head.
Hand me the hammer.

We were putting new siding on the Studio. As I held a sheet of siding against the wall for Carrie to nail in place, she gasped “There is a bee on your head, hand me the hammer!”

The idea of having a bee on my head was somewhat disturbing, but the prospect of Carrie smashing the bee and my head with a hammer was certainly unsettling.

Carrie saw the mix of astonishment and panic on my face and quickly explained that she was going to use the claw end of the hammer to “scoop” the bee out of my hair. I reluctantly passed her the hammer and braced myself for some form of pain, either from a bee sting or a conk on the head.

Neither materialized as Carrie succeeded in getting the bee onto the hammer claw without agitating it or succumbing to what I assumed would be an urge to bop me on the head.

Here is a photo of the Studio as it was Sunday afternoon. The old weather-warped siding has been replaced with new siding. That lower white portion has been caulked and painted with primer. There is a strip of flashing in place between the upper and lower sections. I mention this as all three of these, paint, caulk, and flashing, were missing from the original installation which is why the siding was warped, mildewed, and in need of replacement.

We’ll finish priming and painting this weekend and add the final trim sometime after that.
