Carrie has planted this year’s garden which included setting out newly sprouted plants as well as starting many from seed. I think we have at least one of every herb and vegetable that will grow in Southern California.
Carrie has followed previous years’ successful “Four-Square” farming approach in the garden layout. The beds are made from lumber reclaimed from a retired fish pond as well as some wood left over from various house projects. The frames for the netting that will support the tomatoes and other climbing plants are made from electrical conduit, and shaped with skills and tools Carrie acquired from rewiring the house.
As you can see, the first radish has come up. Radishes are my favorite salad vegetable and I sometimes have trouble getting them into my salad as I eat them all during the trimming and cleaning process. We are trying to compensate for this by planting lots of radishes of different varieties. They are also planted in groups, days apart, so the radish harvest will be somewhat continuous. I hope.
